If you happen to be in Netherlands and are a sucker for cheese then this place is a must visit! Located in the charming fisherman village of Volendam, this place is heaven for cheese lovers. Hell, even a non-cheese lover like I am would still have a good time here.
This place offers various types of cheese, from the basics like cheddar, parmesan, blue cheese, brie, gouda until the unusuals (for me, at least) like dutch cheese with herbs, tiny bites of hams, etc. I wasn’t interested at first. It was my friend who suggested visiting this place because she’s crazy about cheese. But boy, did I have a great time tasting those tasty cheese. Yes, they also provide generous amount of samples that you could nibble while looking around, isn’t that amazing 🙂
This place is not only selling cheese, down below the store they also have a cheese museum where they showcase the making process of cheese, the history behind it, and antique machinery that were used to be the main tools of cheese making. Yup, I can hear you cheese-lovers screaming in excitement. Oh, and did I mention that it’s free entrance?
How to get there?
It’s real easy to reach Volendam if you’re traveling from Amsterdam. Just take the Avia Bus from Amsterdam Centraal for €8 (roundtrip). And once you’ve arrived in Volendam the cheese factory is just 10 minutes walking from the bus stop. If you are feeling lazy, there are plenty of tour services offering a one-day package trip to Volendam and Zaanse Schans.
So, how tempting is this place? I’ll let you decide for yourself. Have a cheesy experience! 🙂
